Sony CMTSBT100 – Sound Test
While not necessarily a dying breed, bookshelf stereo systems have declined in popularity over the past few decades. But there's a certain charm to the design of the bookshelf stereo system, and if you want to play CDs or listen to AM/FM radio, something like the Sony SMTSBT100 Micro Music System has features that eschew the streamlined speaker designs of today.
We put the CMTSBT100 to the test to see how it meets the needs of fans of both legacy and modern audio formats, and what (if any) compromises were made along the way.
Although it’s called a Micro Music System, the CMTSBT100 is only small in the classic bookshelf stereo sense. The main unit, or center console, is over 11 inches wide and over 8 inches deep, while the individual stereo speakers are each over 9 inches high, 6 inches wide, and, with their removable fabric grilles attached, 8.5 inches deep (8 inches without). Of course, you’ll need some extra depth for wiring, as well as room to fit the AM and FM antennas.
