Sony has posted an announcement stating that Steam or PC players will be required to link their profiles to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. This requirement was temporarily "optional" and is now mandatory.

"That grace period is now expiring," Sony said. Needless to say, the news was not well received and immediately sparked a lot of discussion, especially among PC players. According to the announcement, all new Steam players who play the game will be required to link their Steam account to a PSN account starting May 6.
However, current players will be faced with the mandatory login from May 30, 2024. The concern at the heart of this debate is not just about an account, but the issues raised by players are much more complex and need to be addressed.
The announcement Sony released covered almost everything regarding creating and linking a PSN account, but the reasoning behind this mandatory requirement was hidden under the statement "Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security offered on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. This is our primary way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling us to ban players who engage in such behavior. It also gives players who have been banned the right to appeal."
