Square Enix is renewing its PlayStation-focused approach and plans to focus entirely on multiplatform releases for its flagship titles, following disappointing sales in FY23-24.
Square Enix Announces Multiplatform Strategy Amid Layoffs, Financial Reboot…
In its Q4 2024 financial reports, the Japanese developer-publisher said it would “aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy spanning Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs” in order to “create an environment where more customers can enjoy” Square Enix titles.
Over the past year, Square Enix has had several high-profile game launches, including two titles from its flagship series, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which launched exclusively on Sony’s PlayStation 5. Despite their critical success, the games failed to generate significant sales, with Square Enix reporting a reported profit of 14.9 billion yen compared to its estimated profit of 38.5 billion yen. While the publisher hasn’t outright admitted that the drop in profits was due to its PS5-exclusive launches, its multiplatform pivot now leads us to conclude that this was the case.
The multiplatform strategy was announced as a mid-term business plan through March 2027 and could potentially help Square Enix regain lost ground.
