SpaceX is preparing to launch its Starlink satellites, equipped with what the company calls “space lasers.”

In an email update sent to Starlink subscribers this week, the company said it is “preparing to launch enhanced satellites with space lasers.” According to Starlink, the space lasers will allow satellites to transmit data to each other without having to beam it back to a ground station.
The space lasers were originally announced last fall, when the company successfully launched a test of the satellite space lasers into orbit in September.
Lifewire has reached out to SpaceX to ask for an official schedule for the launch of the space lasers into orbit. The company will update this as more information becomes available.
