Steam set a new record for the most concurrent users over the long weekend, and it's likely to do so again in the near future.
Map of all Steam users
According to figures on SteamDB, Steam set a new record for concurrent users this past Thanksgiving weekend, hitting a high of 27,384,959. On November 28, that was an increase of almost 500,000 from the previous record set in April (26,922,926). While the number of Steam users playing games at that time was 7,827,251, that means that almost 20 million people were using the app but not playing a game.
It makes sense considering the Steam Autumn Sale started on the 24th and is still running for a few more days. With all those Steam sale prices, it makes sense that people would log in to take advantage, even if they can't play their new purchases right away.
While it wasn’t just this massive sale that was to blame, games also contributed to Sunday’s new record. The recently released Halo Infinite in particular added just over 140,000 users to the tally on its own. Other popular titles like DayZ and Destiny 2 also brought in over 40,000 users each.
