This article describes the different formats that use the STP file extension. It also explains how to open each type, and how to convert it to another format.
How to Import a CAD STEP File into Your AutoCad Software
A file with the STP/STEP file extension is most likely a STEP 3D CAD file saved in the Standard for the Exchange of Product Data (STEP) format. They contain information about 3D objects and are commonly used to transfer data between different CAD and CAM programs.
Other STP files may be RoboHelp stop list files, which are plain text files containing a list of words that the associated Smart Index wizard should ignore when creating a search index for help documents. For example, words such as "of" and "a" are ignored in documentation searches to avoid displaying irrelevant information.
Microsoft SharePoint also uses STP files, but for template documents. Like any template, it serves as a way to quickly create a web page with a similar design to another.
