Well, Hollywood isn’t dead, but a five-month period of Americans being cooped up in their living rooms has put the film industry on life support. The pandemic is turning the entertainment industry upside down and changing the dynamics of how audiences consume content.
"I think the trend [for] streaming is going to continue, because theaters are never going to recover," UCLA's Howard Suber said in a phone interview. "There's going to be a lot less opportunity to go to theaters in the future."
The closure of movie theaters has been a boon for streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+. According to Conviva, a streaming media intelligence and analytics company, streaming services collectively saw a 63 percent increase in time spent watching from the second quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2020.
