Verizon, Samsung and Qualcomm achieved upload speeds of 711 Mbps during a recent lab test, the three companies announced Thursday. It could potentially change how we use the internet in crowded public spaces, the workplace and at home.

While the companies say they’ve previously measured multi-gigabit download speeds in tests, this is the fastest they’ve achieved while uploading data to the network. They achieved the milestone using aggregated bands of millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. Also known as “extremely high frequency,” mmWave is the spectrum band between 30 GHz and 300 GHz. It’s widely used in airport security scanners, military radar, and scientific research, but is also starting to see use in 5G networks.
The blazing-fast upload speeds will allow people to send videos and photos to the cloud or social media faster, or share data instantly with others in densely populated areas such as city center streets, at concerts and in football stadiums, the companies said.
They can also facilitate online collaboration between students or employees. Meanwhile, businesses can potentially use the uplink speeds in their private networks for quality control, security and augmented reality customer experiences.
