Researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have reportedly found a way to significantly extend the life of batteries, one of the growing developments in the field of energy storage.
“This type of research is important and ultimately these theoretical and experimental findings should lead to longer battery life, which is important from both an environmental and economic perspective,” said Jack Kavanaugh, CEO of energy storage company Nanotech Energy, who was not involved in the Japanese research, in an email interview.
In a recent paper, researchers say that the commonly used graphite anodes in a battery require a binder to hold the mineral together, but the polybinder falls short. They are investigating a new type of binder made from a copolymer that could make batteries last longer.
