Elon Musk has been talking about Tesla’s inevitable autonomous vehicle future for years. The Tesla Robotaxi, also known as Cybercab, is a hot player in that conversation, and has been rumored multiple times to be coming. This self-driving taxi is seemingly inching closer to an official release, but details are still scarce. Here’s what we’ve gleaned so far.
Tesla RoboTaxi service is coming!
Musk previously claimed the Tesla Robotaxi would hit the market in 2020 during Tesla's first Autonomy Investor Day in 2020, but later pegged the production date as 2024.
There was also talk of an affordable electric car that would go into production in late 2025, but lately we've been hearing more and more rumors that this model has been delayed or even canceled.
Given the uncertainty surrounding that model and Tesla's track record of being a bit late with its launch estimates, a 2024 release seems unlikely at this point. Especially since NBC News reports that regulators in several states (Arizona, Nevada and Texas) have yet to hear from Tesla about obtaining the necessary permits.
