Fans of the lane-swapping metagame from this year's 2024 Mid-Season Invitational (yes, all 10 of you) will be sad to hear that Riot is putting an end to it, while the developers prepare a slew of system changes that should help reduce the need for swapping.
Lane Swap Meta Explained | Season 3 to Season 14 | Izento Feature
Lead League of Legends gameplay designer Matt "Phroxzon" Leung-Harrison spilled the details in today's 14.11 preview on X (formerly Twitter), noting that lane swapping had become a "hot topic." "While we believe some of this was due to teams adapting to player differences over time, in some cases it's more optimal than we'd like," Phroxzon said, noting the relatively rapid development of overpowered double-ranged bot lanes at MSI and in high-rank matches in League ranked play.
Riot plans to adjust the first tower’s fortification and gold values to help stop the ever-increasing takeover of lane swaps, but Phroxzon says they don’t want to make the tactic completely unfeasible. “While a few lane swaps are occasionally beneficial for the viewing experience, every match is too far,” the League Balance Boss explained.
How far the values will grow is still unknown, but we'll likely know more when we check out the full preview of patch 14.11 tomorrow.
