The Apple Notes app comes preloaded on every iPad, making it the first app people open when they want to sketch. The basic pen, pencil, and highlighter tools work well for a quick scribble on a napkin, and it syncs across all your devices via iCloud. Notes has a good selection tool and a search function that finds handwritten sentences.

Here’s a cool feature for Apple Pencil users. Tapping your Apple Pencil on the locked iPad screen will open a blank note on most iPad models.

Notes is available as a free download from the App Store if you've deleted it from your iPad. Apple Notes also works on an iPhone.
