Amandla Stenberg isn't all that surprised that "The Acolyte" has ended on Disney+. The "Star Wars" star shared a statement on her Instagram Story on Wednesday, reflecting on the "outrage of hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol" she faced after being cast.

"I'll be honest and say it's not a huge shock to me," Stenberg begins in the video. "There's been a rampage of vitriol that we've been dealing with since the show was even announced, when it was just a concept and no one had even seen it. Then we started having a rampage of, I would say, hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol and prejudice and hatred and hate speech toward us."

While "The Acolyte" generally received praise from critics, the series was review-bombed, meaning that a group of fans formed a digital protest and posted a massive amount of negative reviews. This practice often affects productions that feature actors of color and LGBTQ characters. The 2017 "Star Wars" film "The Last Jedi" also faced extreme backlash from online fans upon its release.

"That really hit me when I got the job. Because it's just not something — even though I expected it to happen — it's not something that you can fully understand until it happens to you," Stenberg said. "But I feel like I've worked through those feelings in a number of ways, including talking about it openly myself. … At a certain point, it became indisputable to me that in order to be myself, I had to honor my value system by talking about it openly, even in the context of working for Disney."
