According to experts, dozens of Indian startups are considering launching a rival Android app store, a move that could threaten Google's position in the market.
Last month, Indian financial services app Paytm was temporarily removed from the Play Store. The ouster sparked outrage in the Indian tech community, echoing growing calls worldwide for a rethink of Apple and Google’s practices.
“Google’s monopoly is bad in the app space for both developers and the end user,” Ashish Rattan, co-founder and CTO of app development agency NeotericAI, said in an email interview. “Google takes a 30 percent cut on in-app purchases. This increases the cost to the user, and the developer takes a huge cut of all [their] work as long as [they] are in business.”
Paytm founders said the percentage Google gets from software sales on the Play Store is unfair.
