The smartphone industry's impact on the environment continues to grow, but a recent teardown of the Samsung Galaxy S21 could point us toward a brighter, greener future.
As smartphones have gotten smaller, their internal hardware has become more compact, often resulting in parts being fused or glued together. This means more expensive repairs, which may lead people to simply buy a new phone and throw out their old ones. However, iFixit’s teardown of Samsung’s latest smartphone reveals a device that’s easier to repair.
“More than 150 million phones are thrown away every year in the U.S. alone,” said Omkar Dharmapuri, founder of Tech Lurn, in an email interview with Lifewire. “People demand the latest and greatest and are more likely to throw away a broken phone than fix it.”
Replacing your smartphone every two years has become the norm, especially since big companies release new devices every year. While it’s nice that new technology is released so quickly, it does come at a cost.
