Images come in different types, and each has its own use. Some file suffixes you will come across are JPEG, TIFF, PSD, BMP, PICT, and PNG.

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG or JPG) is best suited for photos where file size needs to be kept small and you don't mind sacrificing quality for a significant reduction in file size.

When a JPEG file is created, the compressor looks at the image, identifies areas of common colors, and uses those instead. Colors that the compressor does not identify as common are "lost." The amount of color information in the image is reduced, which also reduces the file size.
