Canon's new R100 is so cheap and so good that it might make people ditch their phone cameras.

The R100 is a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses that’s small enough to take anywhere. It’s very basic, but it has everything you need to improve your smartphone photography. But the killer feature is the price. The R100 costs just $480 for the body, and you can buy all the lenses you want with it, including the new super-compact $300 RF28mm f/2.8 “pancake” lens. It looks like a winner, but can it tempt you to ditch your smartphone for photography?
"The R100, despite its low price, has some key features, like a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, a decent 2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and Dual Pixel AF with face and eye detection, which can be very useful for portraits or tracking moving subjects," photographer Kelsey Smith told Lifewire via email. "For beginning photographers looking to step up from smartphone photography, or for those who want a more serious second camera, the EOS R100 could be a suitable choice."
Canon has a history of making great, cheap, popular cameras. When there's a major shift in the camera world – autofocus SLRs, digital SLRs, and now SLR-shaped mirrorless cameras – Canon drops a model that's both the perfect distillation of that new paradigm and so much cheaper that almost everyone buys one.
