Ron Gilbert, the mastermind behind Monkey Island, is working on a new RPG that combines Zelda, Thimbleweed Park, and Diablo. The iconic graphic adventure designer has already shared details about the progress of the Mastodon project.
RetroAhoy: The Secret of Monkey Island
The official site for the studio, which goes by the name Terrible Toybox, says the game will be available in late 2024 or early 2025, if necessary. This will be Toybox’s second sequel following the hugely successful Return to Monkey Island that released in 2022, quickly bringing fans of the franchise back on a new adventure with the same creator.
There is little information about this particular Ron Gilbert title; the game doesn’t even have a name yet. Gilbert says that he is still adding people to the core team at this point, and that the idea and mechanics are not fully developed yet.
TimeExtenstion was the first to report on the project, stating that production started a few months ago and that it's already making good progress. Gilbert also confirmed via Mastodon that Elissa Black has joined the project and will be responsible for designing the quests. Black has worked on games including Swords of Freeport, TownCraft, Metrocide, and Objects in Space.
