The Caps Lock key is my enemy. I keep accidentally hitting it and before I know it, I’ve typed FIVE ANGRY WORDS LIKE THESE. Like a normal human being, I delete these words and turn my all-caps rants into simple sentences. This process is time-consuming unless you use a tool to fix the way macOS handles capitalization. That’s where SmartCapsLock comes in.

SmartCapsLock is a simple utility that lets you use the Caps Lock key to your advantage. Once installed, the app is unobtrusive and does one thing: if you accidentally capitalize a few words, you can quickly select those words and tap Caps Lock again to convert them into sentence form. This works as long as SmartCapsLock is installed and active. If you don't have any words selected, SmartCapsLock does nothing.

This means that the app doesn’t get in the way of other tasks. My only gripe is that SmartCapsLock uses sentence case conversion by default, which means that the first letter of selected text is capitalized. Sometimes I’ve accidentally hit Caps Lock mid-sentence and when I use this app to fix the error, I’m left with a single capitalized letter that’s out of place. Changing the default to lowercase fixed this for me.

You can quickly change this setting by opening SmartCapsLock from the menu bar. It offers a variety of keyboard shortcuts tied to the Caps Lock key, and each of these is mapped to a text conversion option. Feel free to mix up the defaults and prioritize the text conversions you use most. The utility supports uppercase, lowercase, sentence case, capitalization, and a few other fun options, such as SpongeBob Capitalization, which converts random letters to uppercase.
