One of the more fun anti-EV memes is the one that concludes that the grid will collapse under the weight of EVs. They essentially predict a world where everyone switches to electric cars overnight and we end up in a chaotic blackout. Thanks to the power-guzzling electric car sitting in our garages, we are doomed to eternal darkness.
Will Electric Vehicles Destroy the Electric Grid? | Electric Vehicle Basics
The reality is less bleak. Will electric vehicles burden the grid if everyone drives them? That possibility is always there, but it will take years before that happens. Fortunately, things are happening now that should prevent us from being thrown back into the Stone Age.
I’ve talked about how the grid is cleaner than some people think. In other words, electric vehicles aren’t exclusively charged by coal-fired power plants. Coal is only about 19 percent of our grid, and its use will continue to decline over time.
Still, the grid isn’t entirely powered by sunshine and rainbows. What’s nice is that Electrify America’s charging stations will soon be powered by the sky. The sunshine part, not the rainbows. We still don’t have that technology.
