After more than four years of waiting, a completely new microcomputer is finally on the way from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Announced on Thursday, the Raspberry Pi 5 will feature a 64-bit, 2.4GHz processor from Broadcom with four ARM-designed Cortex-A76 cores at its core. According to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the new chip offers two to three times the performance of its predecessor’s chipset. The Pi 5 should also deliver improved graphics performance, thanks to a new 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU. The device is also notable for featuring the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s first in-house silicon, a company that designed its own southbridge to improve I/O performance. In practice, the chip should enable faster transfer speeds between the Pi 5 and external drives and other peripherals.

Speaking of peripherals, the Raspberry Pi 5 has a ton of ports. Most notably, it has two HDMI ports, both of which can output 4K HDR at 60 frames per second. In terms of connectivity, the device also includes Bluetooth 5.0 and Bluetooth LE support, as well as double the peak performance of SD cards. For the first time, a Raspberry Pi computer also features a single-lane PCIe 2.0 interface for additional expandability.
