Industry experts are welcoming the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) proposal to require companies to share information about any data breaches with affected users as quickly as possible.
What is a data breach?
The proposal from FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel comes in the wake of recent data breaches and aims to overhaul current rules given the increased frequency, sophistication and size of data breaches.
“The FCC’s new proposals are a step in the right direction,” Jack Chapman, VP of Threat Intelligence at security vendor Egress, told Lifewire via email. “[They] strengthen data subject protections and improve transparency between providers, consumers, and the regulator itself, which should help support data subject rights in today’s threat landscape.”
According to the FCC press release, the proposed changes are intended to align telecommunications industry rules with laws that apply to other industries.
