Nearly all phones run either iOS or Android, and for the most part, the two are identical. They wake up to a grid of apps, and you switch between them to get things done or—in the case of Instagram or TikTok—to get things done with your brain. But a new breed of mobile devices is starting to emerge, devices that value your attention and privacy more than the onslaught of distractions and data mining. And it looks like Apostrophe has come up with a great way station.
"The dearth of alternative phone operating systems can be attributed to the entrenched market position of iOS and Android, which pose a significant barrier to new entrants. User awareness, app ecosystems, and developer support play a crucial role in maintaining the duopoly," Dhanvin Sriram, founder of software company PromptVibes, told Lifewire via email.
In the old days, computing was document-based. You would find a file on your computer, a Word document, a PDF, an image of some sort, and then open it to read or edit it. Even when you started Photoshop to, say, create something from scratch, you created a file and carefully placed it in a folder somewhere.
