During the flurry of distractions that was Apple’s Mac Studio reveal, the iMac Pro and 27-inch iMac slipped out a side door. They’re both now gone from the Apple Store, perhaps never to be seen again.
The iMac Pro is delayed AGAIN! (I was wrong 😔)
The iMac Pro was perhaps Apple’s strangest Mac ever. Intended to replace the “trash can” Mac Pro, it never saw an update beyond a few processor changes, and is now presumed dead. Following the Mac Studio product announcement on Tuesday, March 8, Apple discontinued the iMac Pro, along with the 27-inch iMac, though it is more likely to return. The iMac Pro always seemed like a stopgap, but the 27-inch iMac will be missed if it never returns.
"I can't speak to the rumors, but in terms of product fit, I think the 27-inch iMac no longer has a place in the lineup. I think the Mac Studio and Studio Display will take that spot," Apple expert John Gruber wrote in a blog post.
In 2013, Apple introduced a cylindrical Mac Pro, nicknamed the “trashcan” Mac. This little black tube couldn’t keep up with the cooling demands of newer, hotter CPUs, and Apple left it without updates for three years before admitting its flaws in 2017 (though it remained on sale until 2019).
