The next iPhone could keep you safe in the wilderness and ruin horror movies.
SHOULD YOU TRUST YOUR LIFE TO APPLE? // iPhone 14 Satellite Emergency SOS vs InReach
Apple is adding two satellite-based safety features to future iPhones, according to insider information published by Bloomberg. One is for emergency notification, a bit like a more targeted 911 call, but without the voice part. The other will let iPhone users send an emergency text message to a pre-selected contact. Because it’s via satellite, it could work anywhere on the planet, not just in populated areas with cellular coverage.
“This is ideal for areas where there is no signal, such as wilderness areas and other remote, isolated locations. Knowing that help is just a phone call away can make you feel a lot more secure,” James Leversha, director of IT support and website development company Top Notch IT, told Lifewire via email.
"In addition, the feature would make it possible to contact first responders in locations with poor coverage. When there is no signal, users can text emergency services and emergency contacts via satellite."
