Microsoft has officially retired Internet Explorer after 25 years as the premier Internet browser.
Microsoft Edge | Internet Explorer Discontinuation Announcement
In May 2021, Microsoft announced that June 15, 2022 would be the last day of Internet Explorer. While the once-popular browser has had its ups and downs over the years, experts say its legacy will last longer than its expiration date.
“Just as Hoover was a brand that became as widely adopted as the term vacuum cleaner, it is likely that Internet Explorer will continue to have this impact long after the tool itself is defunct,” Alex Magnin, former head of revenue strategy at GIPHY, wrote in an email to Lifewire.
In a sign of our modern, high-tech and fast-paced age, Microsoft said that the reason behind discontinuing Internet Explorer is so that the company can focus on the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser.
