A recent teardown from iFixit has revealed that the new M2 MacBook Air features noticeably little cooling equipment as an unprecedented heat wave rages across parts of Europe and the US.
M2 MacBook Air after a week | PROBLEMS? What problems?
While tearing apart the M2 MacBook Air, iFixit notes that the laptop, like its predecessor, doesn’t feature a cooling fan, which isn’t surprising. What is alarming, however, is a very minimal passive cooling system. Apple has also decided to ditch the heat spreader that was part of the M1 MacBook Air, and is instead relying solely on thermal paste and graphite tape to cool the laptop. Experts are concerned, but not overly concerned.
“Apple has an incredible track record of thermal engineering in the MacBook Air product line,” Tom Bridge, Principal Product Manager, Apple, at JumpCloud, told Lifewire via email. “If they say all they need is tape and thermal paste, they are almost certainly correct.”
When they removed the device's lid, iFixit saw “an impressive amount of empty space,” but they were dismayed by the heat spreader, which was noticeably absent.
