Tech companies ranging from Facebook (now Meta) to Google are jumping on the idea of a shared virtual reality in which we communicate via avatars. The metaverse could boost the adoption of VR headsets by making them as commonplace as smartphones are today.
“Major technology platforms (which have benefited from the rise of mobile computing apps) now see augmented reality as the next shift in computing platforms,” Goldman Sachs analyst Eric Sheridan wrote in a recent report.
The idea of using avatars to communicate and process transactions is not far-fetched, as many video games already offer a similar experience.
