Nintendo's upcoming Zelda game will use the same map as 2017's Breath of the Wild, and that might be the best news of all.
What is the NEXT ZELDA GAME?
Like a familiar neighborhood after a few years of being away, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may technically be the same place, but your existing familiarity with the layout makes any differences seem all the starkest and most fun. And who hasn’t explored the entirety of Breath of the Wild’s version of Hyrule, anyway? The new game, coming to Switch on May 12, may be set in the same world, but it adds new ways to interact with it and even reveals a floating world above.
“It’s pretty cool to be able to explore the same places again in a fresh new game, as I loved the world of Zelda BotW. There’s something nostalgic and comforting about revisiting those familiar landscapes and seeing how they’ve changed or evolved,” Inverse Gamer editor Michael Hereford told Lifewire via email.
Technically, most of Nintendo’s Zelda games are set in the land of Hyrule. Back in the day, it felt very different from game to game, as console technology at the time allowed for huge leaps in both size and gameplay mechanics. For example, 1991’s A Link to the Past introduced Dark World, a parallel version of the normal Light World that you could flip into to access new areas.
