The Android operating system, introduced in February 2009, runs on all Android smartphones and tablets. Because it is open source, some devices run a modified version of the operating system (OS), but most have a similar look and feel and share the same functionality. Each version of the OS has a corresponding number and each had its own dessert code name until Android 10, such as Cupcake, KitKat, Lollipop, etc.

Like Android 13, Android 14 first rolled out to Pixel phones before expanding to a wider list of devices. You’ll receive a notification when/if the update is available for your device. You can also manually check for an Android OS update to “force” the update.
