It feels like artificial intelligence (AI) just fell out of the sky into our laps this past year, doesn’t it? It’s everywhere now! But AI isn’t new; it’s actually been around for a long time, quietly helping humanity.
How will AI change the world?
Artificial intelligence began as a theory, some argue, in the 18th century using statistics. Computers, of course, were not part of that concept, and several subsequent attempts to develop it failed until the mid-twentieth century.
Before the modern era, AI actually began in the 1950s when Alan Turing standardized a test to see if a human could tell the difference between another human and a computer program. If a person cannot tell the difference within a certain amount of time, the computer is said to have artificial intelligence.
Engineers are still performing this basic test, while more elements are added every day to help AI evolve into a useful companion for humans.
