The Rogue Prince of Persia Early Access Review

The story behind Rogue Prince of Persia is a strikingly roguelike, with a few twists that set it apart from predecessors like Hades or Backpack Hero. Players control the elderly Prince of Persia, whose loved ones have fallen victim to a mystical, currently undefeatable enemy. To save the day, he must rewind time over and over again until he has learned and done enough to defeat the evil creature for good. It’s a classic tale that Prince of Persia and dungeon crawler fans alike can enjoy.

While the story revolves around this overwhelmingly difficult objective, it offers smaller objectives that keep it from feeling too one-sided. These quests are found by meeting new NPCs and carefully exploring unlocked locations. When I first started the game, I ran into Azadeh, the leader of Zagros Village. Talking to her opened the way to the Hun War Camp and led me on a rescue mission for the prince’s brother, Shahin. Small quests like these breathe new life into the game by adding more meaning and reason to explore the areas you’re passing through. They push you to take paths and do things you normally wouldn’t do while pursuing the final boss. Furthermore, they make the story feel more alive and vibrant. If you were going to take on the best villain to save your family, wouldn’t you naturally help them?

As the story progresses, players will be able to see the Prince mature through his dialogues and exchanges with other characters. The way he even speaks to Berude will change as players spend more time with the game. It emphasizes how the Prince is mentally maturing even while his physical body is stuck in a time loop.
