The latest Discord update adds Stickers that users can share in their messages. Some believe that Discord is doing a good job of transitioning into a more mainstream messaging app, while other experts believe that the limited nature of updates like Stickers means that Discord is uncertain about how the market will react to the new moves.

In recent months, Discord has been working hard to change the way users see it. What started as a place for gamers has quickly expanded and changed, with Discord even changing its branding to reflect the app’s move toward a more mainstream communications platform. While it’s not making huge strides to catch up with popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, some experts believe its latest update, which adds stickers, could be the company’s way of testing the market.
“There’s a reason Discord is only rolling out the Sticker feature to a select group,” Yaniv Masjedi, Chief Marketing Officer at Nextiva, wrote via email. “They’re still unsure about the market reception and whether the investment is worth pursuing or not.”
After the initial announcement that Stickers would be coming to the app, Discord announced that only Canadian users on desktop and iOS would have access to the new feature. There are plans to roll it out to other regions later.
