The Vision Pro is now arriving in the hands of buyers, and the reviews are in. It’s big, it’s heavy, and its battery dangles by a cable, but apparently there’s one surprising feature that has already changed how we’ll use all VR devices of the future.
Apple Vision Pro Review – Why Does This Exist?
Apple’s Vision Pro is a beautifully built virtual reality headset with a few hardware twists. The most noticeable is the large front-facing display, which Apple values so much that it’s willing to take the hit from the heavy glass and OLED. Another difference is that Apple has opted to use a separate battery pack on a cord, rather than mounting the battery inside the device. But the biggest feature, in typical Apple style, is how well this hardware works with the software to truly create a new kind of computing.
“My initial reaction to the reviews is that I want one even more than I did when there was so much speculation about the tech specs, form factor, use cases, etc. What’s clear is that the Vision Pro has significantly raised the bar for what’s possible with cutting-edge, consumer-focused XR technology, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one and explore what’s possible,” Christopher Bellaci, CEO of in-car VR company Holoride, told Lifewire via email.
Let’s start with the hardware. Every reviewer, from Marques Brownlee to Apple expert John Gruber to The Verge’s Nilay Patel, has noted the weight. Apple insists on using aluminum and glass instead of plastic, making this device so heavy that the battery had to be put in a separate package. The other problem with this design is that all of the weight is concentrated in the front. It’s easy to carry heavy headphones around because the center of gravity is in the middle of your head. The Vision Pro’s design puts all of that out the front.
