The sequel to 2013’s Risk of Rain ups the ante considerably with fully three-dimensional graphics – arguably the most significant graphical overhaul for a sequel in gaming history. Going from an almost Terraria-esque sidescrolling pixelated action platformer to an immersive, AAA-esque beastie is no easy feat, but Hopoo Games has pulled it off perfectly. Risk of Rain 2 made all the right choices for a series revamp, retaining the same gameplay objectives and core mechanics while translating them into the third dimension. The original, unpolished chaos that comes with progressing through Risk of Rain 2’s roguelike looter-shooter progression knows no bounds as the game steadily cranks the insanity up to 11. A must-play for gamers in general, or anyone who wants to see just how frantic a game can really get.
