Urbanista's Phoenix Solar Earbuds are officially available, so you can experience the hypothetical "endless playtime" for yourself.

Solar powered headphones

The Urbanista Phoenix was first rumored earlier this summer, but today marks the first time the earbuds are available to purchase. So if you’re interested in how solar charging works on something smaller than an over-ear headphone, now’s your chance.

Unlike Urbanist’s Los Angeles headphones, which can charge directly from indoor and outdoor light, the Phoenix earbuds have to rely on the charging case due to their size. So while the earbuds don’t charge via solar power, the charging case does. That means that as long as you can put the earbuds back in their case and expose them to some form of light, you won’t run out of juice.

In addition to solar power, Phoenix earbuds also feature active noise cancellation and noise-canceling microphones. They can detect when they’re placed in your ear, automatically power off, support multipoint connections, and have an IPX4 water resistance rating (against splashes, light rain, etc.).
