That said, there's one particular variation on the old minesweeper that has consumed my spare time to a degree I'm ashamed to admit: Moocowsgomoo's Tacticsweeper, a free-to-play game that introduces turrets, cryomines, scanners, and a wide variety of other tools and threats to spice up the classic formula in an intoxicating way.
Minesweeper is a fantastic little game, the crown jewel of the original Windows Entertainment Pack (think FreeCell and similar games as companions), one of the few old-school time-wasters that has survived to this day.
It was such an ingenious little product that even Microsoft founder Bill Gates became hopelessly addicted to it in the early 90s. He battled his engineers to break their records, even going so far as to delete the game from his own PC to regain some lost productivity. To no avail, however, as he ended up sneaking into then-Microsoft President Michael Hallman's office to play after hours.
