A prank by Just Chatting streamer PaymoneyWubby about Wizards of the Coast adding the Magic: The Gathering Reserve List Reparations card to the Banned and Restricted announcements because it was deemed offensive led to a price increase of over $30 on June 5.
The Reserved List is a Lie | Magic: The Gathering
It’s not uncommon for older MTG cards to increase in price during the release of a set, especially if that new set is Modern Horizons 3. But that wasn’t the case with a Mirage Reserve List card printed in 1996 called Reparations. The nearly 30-year-old card is only playable in the Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker MTG formats, but its price went up on May 31 and has been climbing ever since. But the price increase isn’t due to a new card making Reparations playable, but because streamer PaymoneyWubby joked that WotC banned the card for being offensive, and that collectors should buy near-mint copies to sell if a ban were to happen.
“There is not enough reparations, or near-zero reparations, in my opinion, to make people a godsend amount of money,” PaymoneyWubby said.
The MTG card Reparations doesn't get much play these days, though spinoff versions like Rhystic Study do. And there's an argument that the three-drop Azorius Enchantment is inappropriate, particularly the flavor text.
