If you’re an iPad user, you’ve probably given away an old iPad to a friend or family member—or been the recipient of such a kindness. And according to a new study from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), we’re not alone. While most iPhone users trade in their phones for a newer model, iPad users are more likely to just give them away. But why?
“[P]eople are more likely to pass on their old iPads than their iPhones, largely because iPads generally have a longer lifespan. Unlike iPhones, which are subject to daily wear and tear and are charged frequently, iPads are often used in more stationary environments and for less demanding tasks,” Diasy co-founder and CEO and home technology expert Hagan Kappler told Lifewire via email.
First, some numbers. Of the iPhone upgraders surveyed, 42 percent traded in their existing iPhone for a new one, compared to just 3 percent of iPad buyers. Instead, 31 percent of iPad upgraders gave their old iPad to friends or family, compared to just 11 percent of iPhone users.
