It’s finally happened. The iPhone has moved to USB-C, and one surprising feature may mean no one will be complaining about not being able to use their old Lightning cables anymore.
Apple's USB-C trick: The iPhone 15 Pro's hidden cable controversy?
The iPhone now uses a USB-C port for charging and data, just like your iPad, Mac, Android phone, and every other electronic gadget you’ve bought in the last few years that didn’t come from the dollar store. Scratch that. Even my electric fly swatter, also known as the Insect-O-Cutor, has a USB-C charging port. And yet, people are still going to hate having to throw out those old charging cables—until they realize you can now use your iPhone to charge your Apple Watch or your AirPods.
“I think the ability to charge your AirPods or Apple Watch using the USB-C port on the new iPhone 15 is a useful feature, especially in emergencies where you need to quickly charge your devices,” Carl Borg, founder of CleverFixes, told Lifewire via email. “It’s not just a gimmick, but a practical solution that takes advantage of the versatility and power of USB-C.”
We’ve been through this before. Back in the summer of ’21, we enjoyed some speculation that Apple would let you charge your AirPods from an iPhone, but without the cable. We thought that maybe MagSafe would be the connective charging tech, and that you could simply place your ‘Pods case on the back of your iPhone to charge them.
