TikTok will begin labeling AI-generated content from other platforms using its Content Credentials system, the company announced Thursday. TikTok says it's the first video-sharing company to implement the technology, which automatically attaches metadata to images and videos (audio-only content tools are coming soon).
How to Label AI Generated Content on TikTok
TikTok already requires users to label their own use of AI, and automatically labels “realistic” AI-generated content and content created with TikTok’s AI effects system. Meta has similar rules in place as AI becomes more ubiquitous across the internet.
The new automatic labeling comes thanks to TikTok’s partnership with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a group of tech and media companies including Adobe, BBC, Google, Intel, Microsoft, OpenAI and Sony. The technical specifications can certify the source and history of media pieces, which can then travel with the media data across platforms, even when that content is downloaded.
“With TikTok’s massive community of creators and users worldwide, we’re excited to welcome them to both the C2PA and CAI as they begin their journey to bring greater transparency and authenticity to the platform,” Dana Rao, Adobe’s general counsel and chief trust officer, said in a statement. “In an age where any digital content can be altered, providing ways for audiences to discern what’s true is critical. Today’s announcement is a critical step toward achieving that outcome.”
