Before you do anything else, check both the airline and the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) websites to make sure you know the rules. Whether you take it on the plane or pack it in your checked luggage, regulations regarding electronic devices can affect how you pack it.
Pack your camera securely. Look for a padded camera bag with separate compartments for lenses, camera body, flashes, and other accessories. Or, to save some money, repack the gear in its original box and padding.
Do not package a DSLR camera with the lens attached. If the packaging applies force to the lens barrel, the delicate wires connecting the two may break. Package the body and lens separately with the appropriate caps on both units. These caps should be in your original box if you still have them.
