Serious and amateur photographers alike never leave their gear behind when they travel. Traveling is a great opportunity to take memorable photos, but it can be risky for that expensive gear. Use these tips for packing your camera bag for travel to ensure your gear arrives safely.

Before packing, make sure all covers are securely fastened on your camera: USB ports, lens caps, battery compartment, etc. Shock and impact can cause parts to tear or become loose.

If you are flying with a DSLR camera, do not travel with the lens attached to the camera body. Shifts during flight can strain or damage the threads that attach the lens to the camera. Carry it separately and make sure all lens caps are secure at both ends.

Remove the battery and memory card from your camera when you travel. This way, you don’t have to worry about the camera accidentally turning on and draining the battery while you’re on the road. Keep the battery handy, though; airport security staff may ask you to prove that the camera is in working order.
