If you spend much time on CleanTok or looking at beautiful, well-organized homes on social media, you’ll undoubtedly come across trends, some of which make more sense than others. Knolling is one such example: the term refers to a way of organizing what you’ve organized, which sounds over the top, but it makes sense once you get started.

This word and idea comes from a sculptor named Andrew Kromelow who named it in the 80s after the studio where he worked organizing tools for another artist. When organizing things, whether they are tools like Kromelow used or not, you have to consider their placement, ideally in a visually appealing pattern, like a grid.
This works well because when you organize, you should already have your items sorted into categories and placed in designated containers; those are the basic rules of the Organizational Triangle. Knolling, or turning those designated spots into easily accessible spaces, is the logical next step.
If your stuff isn’t already organized and categorized into drawers, shelves, and containers, do that first. You can use any decluttering and organization method you want, but your goal should be to get rid of the stuff you don’t use and make room for the stuff you do use and need.
