There’s a whole industry dedicated to helping people learn to cook for themselves. Think Hello Fresh and Blue Apron, meal kits with step-by-step instructions that allow anyone to make a great dinner. But you don’t have to spend a fortune on someone else’s groceries to learn how to cook. If you’re looking for something a little less complicated, consider Zest, which is basically the Duolingo of cooking.

Duolingo, as you may know, is an app designed to make learning languages easy. A clean, simple user interface guides you through what you need to learn with each lesson, with options for both free and paying customers. Zest follows the same philosophy; but instead of learning languages, it teaches you all about food.
Once you’ve created your account, you’ll be greeted by a friendly tiled UI: First up is a big ‘Featured Lesson’ (mine was a ‘Cooking Basics’ lesson called ‘Flavors’). Below that, you’ll see ‘Up Next’ lessons, including things like ‘Fat & Acid’, ‘Pans & Skillets’, ‘Ovens’, and ‘Extract & Infuse’.
Tapping on any of these options will give you an overview of the class, including your current progress (which will be 0% if you've only tapped on the class), an Instagram-esque highlights section for quick access to different parts of the class, the number of recipes you're learning, and a full breakdown of what you're going to do.
