Car thieves use AirTags to track and steal expensive cars.
TRACK YOUR CAR with Apple AirTags! The BEST anti-theft solution!
Since September of this year, auto theft investigators with York Regional Police in Aurora, Ontario, have seen five incidents where Apple’s AirTag trackers were used to steal cars, and now it appears it’s happening in the US, too. The tags are hidden on expensive cars when they’re parked in public places.
Thieves then follow the tag to the victim’s home, usually in a less public place, and steal it by breaking into the car and using a mechanic’s diagnostics system to convince the car to accept the thieves’ key. And unfortunately, AirTags’ built-in privacy may be so good that there’s not much Apple can do to help.
"Regardless of whether Apple is able to identify thieves specifically targeting AirTags, the company will still be obligated to fully cooperate with any legal investigation that requires their assistance, and will be held legally liable if anything turns out to have arisen as a result of any discovered gaps in their security features or privacy policies," attorney Collen Clark told Lifewire via email.
