After restarting the verification process less than four months ago, Twitter is pausing it again, saying it wants to improve the overall process.

The process of getting verified on Twitter has been something of a rollercoaster since the platform attempted to accept public submissions a few years ago. Twitter eventually stopped accepting applications altogether in 2017, and verification wasn’t brought back until May 2021. Now, it’s stopped accepting verifications again , with the official @verified account noting that the company is “making improvements to the application and review process.”
What Twitter means by “improvements” wasn’t specified, though NewsBytes attributes the decision to the platform having recently verified multiple fake accounts. It’s likely that Twitter is trying to find a way to keep the verification process open while also filtering out fake or spam accounts.
This is frustrating for many users, as the process only recently started up again and there are still many people waiting for a response to their applications. The Twitter Verified account has responded to many of these concerns directly, saying that it is still reviewing applications submitted before the pause. It did not provide an estimate of how long that will take, but said that it is trying to review all applications as quickly as possible.
