When you write a tweet, you can now choose from three options to determine who can respond: Everyone, only people you follow, or only people you mention in the tweet.
Twitter already has mute and block features, but blocks are applied after the fact and mutes are a blunt tool. These new reply-restriction settings will ensure that users don’t see abuse, making conversations on the service safer and more enjoyable while still being public.
“Sometimes people feel more comfortable talking about what happens when they can choose who can comment,” said Suzanne Xie, Twitter's director of product management, in a blog post.
