Windows has many alt-key shortcuts programmed in that you can use to type symbols and accented letters, regardless of the application you are using. There are two ways to do this; the first requires a keyboard with a full numeric keypad, while the second method uses the Windows character map.

The numeric keypad on a Windows computer allows you to use the ANSI code for special characters and symbols.

Press Alt + [the number code for the symbol or accent letter]. For example, Alt + 1 inserts ☺, while Alt + 0153 inserts the trademark ™.
