Have you ever found yourself in a meeting where you’re taking notes, looking things up, or just secretly hanging out with your coworkers? You might want to hide the constant tapping of your keyboard. If you can’t mute yourself during those conversations, try Unclack, a free Mac app that mutes the sounds of your typing.
How to Mute Internal Microphone (Mic) on Mac
The app is deceptively simple and does its job quite effectively. It mutes the microphone as soon as you start typing and unmutes it as soon as you finish. This is very useful for those long online meetings where it gets annoying to have to keep muting yourself.
Once you’ve installed Unclack, you’ll see it in your Mac’s menu bar. Click on the app icon and select Configure keyboard access. This will open a popup, where you can click on the keyboard permissions button. This will take you to your Mac’s Accessibility settings page. You’ll need to manually add Unclack here by clicking on the + button and selecting the app from your Applications folder in the Finder. Once this is done, Unclack will prompt you to close and reopen the app, and you’ll be good to go.
When Unclack is working, you’ll see a red dot on the menu bar icon as you type. This indicates that your microphone is muted. You can go into the app’s settings to customize the app a bit. Unclack has a variable mute volume setting, which allows you to set a preferred microphone volume as you type. This is useful if you don’t want to mute yourself completely, but just want to lower your microphone volume when you’re typing. You can also adjust your microphone volume when you’re not typing, which is useful for people who don’t like to be too loud during online meetings.
